As part of Light Night 2017, Arts & Crafts at Malt Cross presents a solo exhibition by Katrina Cowling made up of newly commissioned sculptures that will take over our gallery space. The exhibition will run from 10th Feburary to 26th March.
Utilising neon lighting, Katrina Cowling creates evocative installations made up of minimal forms that challenge and push the medium. Neon lighting, a medium that is notoriously fragile and difficult to work with, is also beguiling in its ability to transform a space as a light source.
Slick, corporate aesthetics and highly finished materials are combined with traditional crafts and obscure production methods, creating an installation that is part gleaning showroom, part naïve anthropological display. Sleek surfaces and forms reminiscent of packaging and industrial detritus sit amongst rock strata and sensuous light forms.
In 2014 the Malt Cross received Heritage Lottery Funding to open a below ground workshop and gallery to support artists and makers and provide opportunities for the general public to learn more about Arts & Crafts.
