Safe Space

The Safe Space was birthed out of the Street Pastor project when we realised that it gets cold in the middle of the night, and there were lots of people who needed first aid or some to listen to them.

We also realised that the people of Nottingham had nowhere safe to go to out of hours if they needed help or advice or just somewhere safe to wait for a taxi.

Pilot project

Therefore we led a pilot project based out of a small shop at the front of the Malt Cross, which launched in December 2010 supported by the NHS, Police, government agencies, and NGO’s. We provided a volunteer-led safe space in the city during December on Friday and Saturday nights between the hours of 10pm and 4am for anyone to go to whether they just need somewhere safe to wait for a taxi, advice, signposting or first aid.

The pilot project was successful and therefore the project will become a permanent fixture in the city on Friday and Saturday nights.

What's involved?

Safe Space volunteers, give one night a month from 10pm – 4am and go work in the safe space with 1 other person and 2 door staff. Each Safe Space volunteer gets 12 sessions of training covering things such as First Aid, conflict management, listening and counselling, drugs and alcohol training, domestic abuse and victim support training.
